Citygas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Ministry of Renovation (MOR)

10 Jun 2021

Typically, most Singaporean staying in Housing Development Board (HDB) flats is mostly using Citygas for their stove cooking rather than using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) nowadays. Certainly, this is safer (CityGas, 2020) and easier for cooking in every household as city gas pipe can run directly to the stove location during renovation period saving up more save storage cabinet for kitchen essential food items compared to the household that is using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank. Furthermore, you will need to call up for the gas tank supplier to change the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank whenever the gas has used up or going to runs out.

In a comparison of these two different ways of using gas in terms of the price, not to mention induction electric stove, in the Ministry of Renovation opinion, using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank (UnionGas, 2021) will be cheaper. Although it is much troublesome as it will need to cater space for a gas tank space below the stove and sometimes even for an additional spare gas tank if necessary, which will take up more space in the kitchen cabinet storage.

Alternatively, private sectors like the condo, landed properties, especially for the coffee shop or food court and even food restaurant are all mostly using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank, mainly due to the hassle of running a new city gas pipes line into the sector from the main sources of gas supply as sometimes the building is too old, it does not have any main gas source nearby.

Additionally, City gas in Singapore is also dealing with gas heaters that can use for showering, and some Housing Development Board (HDB) flats homeowners will use this kind of Citygas heater for showers. So, what is the good and bad thing about using Citygas heater in your household?

From the Ministry of Renovation viewpoint, it is not a matter of whether using electrical or Citygas to heat the cold water in your water heater. Instead, it is the matter of water pressure that comes out from your showering head that is then the main concern. Whether or not, running Citygas or instant heater, homeowners still want the water pressure to be strong while showering especially to those homeowners that install rain showers for their bathroom. After all, using gas is more environmentally friendly than electricity (CityGas, 2020).
